What Is The Cutoff Score For The Nce

How To Apply For The NCE (National Counselor Exam) On NBCC | Tutorial

As discussed before, 160 of the 200 questions count toward your total score. Every administration of the exam offers a different form of the test and the passing score varies with each administration. Recently, the minimum criterion scores required to pass have ranged from 90 to 102 . This translates to getting 56% to 64% of the items correct. If you live in a state that sets its own cutoff score, rather than using the one established by the NBCC, the passing score may be different.

Deferring Or Missing Your Appointment

If you need to postpone or defer your examination date to the next available administration, you may do so without penalty if you contact NBCC more than 30 days before your scheduled exam date. If you fail to contact NBCC within the allotted time frame, or you do not show up for your examination, you will be required to pay a $150 reregistration fee to take it on the next available administration date. The only exceptions would be in the event of an emergency, such as an accident or illness, which may waive the reregistration fee upon approval.

If there are unforeseen circumstances, such as inclement weather, that prevent test administrators from opening the facility and require cancellation and rescheduling of the NCE examination on behalf of NBCC, you will receive an e-mail or telephone notification with instruction on how to reschedule your exam.

What To Expect On The Nce

The National Counselor exam is a 200-question, multiple-choice, non-sectioned, pencil and paper formatted test. On the test, you will be presented with a series of questions created from the original eight Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs content areas and five work behaviors from NBCCs national job analysis. All of these questions have undergone review and field-testing prior to being included on the examination and a new version of the National Counselors exam is administered for each new test date.

Of the 200 questions you will be asked, 160 are counted for scoring in order to determine whether you achieve a passing grade, with the remaining 40 being unscored field-test items used for statistics to gauge whether they should be used on future versions of the NCE exam.

Questions will be based on the following six domains:

Whats On The Nce Exam

The fee to take the NCE exam is $275.

The National Counselor Exam, or the NCE, is an exam offered by the National Board for Certified Counselors. The NCE exam is used to determine if candidates have the knowledge, skills, and abilities that are required to become an effective counselor.

The NCE exam contains 200 multiple-choice questions that need to be completed in three hours and 45 minutes. Out of the 200 questions on the exam, only 160 items are scored.

The NCE exam contains two content areas: CACREP and Work Behaviors that are determined by NBCCs national job analysis.

What Is The Format Of The National Counselor Examination

The NCE contains 200 multiple choice questions. Of these 200 questions, 40 are included for experimental purposes and are not “graded” or counted in a candidates total score. Therefore, the highest score a candidate can receive on the exam is 160. However, since you cannot differentiate questions included for experimental purposes from those that are graded, you should consider all questions to be of equal weight when you take the exam.

All exam questions provide four alternative answers and only one answer is scored as correct for each item. There is NO penalty for guessing. Therefore, you should mark an answer for EVERY question, even when you are uncertain about whether your response is correct.

This book was easy to read & great for review. I passed my test first try & didn’t really study other than flipping thru this book. If you’re someone who plans to really study for this exam, I definitely recommend this book because it’s an easy way to get a lot of info in a short amount of time!

I bought this book with 3 weeks left to study for the NCE. I also bought the Rosenthal Encyclopedia and practice tests from the makers of this book. I made notecards from all the info In this book and took the practice test the night before the test. I passed with flying colors! I briefly glanced at the Rosenthal encyclopedia the night before. It has great information and questions, but the size of the book itself was overwhelming for me. This book skipped the fluff, was easy to follow and has simple explanations. I pretty much used this book as a stand alone study guide and only glanced at the others because I spent so much money on them. I highly recommend this as a study guide for the NCE!

Good information! I appreciate being able to take a practice test after studying and then comparing the answers with the ones provided in the back of the study guide. I appreciate how thorough the answers were to the test. It allowed me to understand how and why I missed some of the questions. Excellent study material.

One of the best study guides Ive come across. I highly recommend it to anyone attempting the NCE exam.

Your Score On The National Counselor Exam

Some practicing counselors and graduate students believe that their score on the National Counselor Exam is determined by all the scores of others taking the same exam at the same time. The lament is: If I take the exam with a bunch of very high performers on the NCE, my score will be influenced by them and I wont do well. That is false!

NBCC develops several forms of the NCE each year. They are used all over the country and most are administered by computer. For each form of the exam, NBCC determines what the passing cutoff score is and makes this determination long before that form of the exam is administered. The passing cutoff score is determined by the particular mix of the 160 questions scored for you on that form of the exam. For the vast majority of exam forms created and administered by NBCC during the past 12-15 years, the passing cutoff score has ranged from 90 to 99. So if you fail or pass the NCE, blame or praise NBCC , not the other counselors taking the exam when you do.

And, some state licensure boards convert the NBCC passing score to some state-established minimum such as 75%. In such a state, the board says you need to get a minimum score of 75% right answers. That 75% is exactly the same as the required raw score correct on the NCE such as 97 or 92, or 99 on that form of the exam.
