Strategies To Make The Bar Exam Easier

- Make a study schedule: Set aside a specific number of hours to study each week and put them on your calendar as an appointment so you will not miss your study session or use another excuse to not study.
- Take advantage of study guides, books, and review courses that are available to you. If you need help deciding on a course, check out our detailed list of best bar review courses.

- Be sure to rest and give yourself some down time so that you do not get burned out. If you plan your study schedule well in advance of the actual exam you will be self-pacing towards your final goal.

Myths Around What Is A Passing Score For The Essay Or The Mbe
You do not pass an essay or a PT by scoring a certain amount. You only pass or do not pass the exam itself based on your overall scaled score.
Technically speaking, an essay that scores a 65 does not mean you pass the essay. Its just a score. Rather, it historically put you on track to pass, assuming all else is similar.
Under the new cut score of 1390, an average raw written score of approximately 61 would typically get you to a scaled written score of 1390. You do not pass or fail the written portion. You do not pass or fail the MBE portion. You do not need to pass both sections to pass the exam. You could get all 60s on the essays and PT and still pass the exam. You could get all 70s on the essays and PT and still fail the exam. A high MBE score is not an auto-pass, but it will reduce the score you need on the written side. In that sense, high-scoring essays and PT are also an auto-pass.
If you say passing essay as a shorthand for the above, fine. But please try not to spread misinformation that you can pass or fail a given essay or PT, or that you can pass or fail the MBE. Rant over.

A Few Extra Points On The Bar Exam Is Significant
The bar exam curve is very real. Check out the Multistate Bar Exam National Scaled Score Distribution charts published by the National Conference of Bar Examiners for 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. MBE score results consistently fall into a bell curve pattern every single bar exam administration.

A few students have a very high MBE scaled score and a few have a very low scaled score. Most bar takers fall right in the middle within a few points of each other. In most U.S. states, your MBE score makes up 50% of your overall bar exam score and the other exam components are weighted to the MBE.
All this really means is that the MBE portion of the exam is very important to your overall score in almost all U.S. states, and that many people who fail the bar exam do so by just a few points. In other words, just a few additional points can tip many bar takers into the passing zone.
BARBRI has studied the MBE since it debuted in 1972. The best bar exam passing strategy starts by understanding the bar exam curve and by tracking your percentile rank during bar prep.

How Much Preparation Is Required
Passing the Bar Exam requires far more than some last minute cramming and natural brains. The average law student will need to spend around 400 hours to pass the exam successfully. Of course this number is a guide only, but it certainly gives a good indication of the time required. If you are a full time student, this means you will need to start studying at least nine weeks before the Bar Exam. If you have other commitments you should start much sooner. Equally, the more time you spend preparing, the greater the chance of first time success. The majority if your preparation should be on learning the subject content and completing practice examination questions. The last few weeks before the exam, focus should be on reviewing the law and taking timed practice exams.
In summary, spend as much time as possible effectively studying treating it like a full time job and your number one priority. Using a private bar exam tutor will ensure your study time is spent wisely. While it isnt feasible to use a tutor for every study session, regularly meeting with one will help keep you on track and answer any questions you have. They may even be helpful at providing feedback on your practice examinations since theyve been there, done that and passed.
Grading The Performance Test
The PT is also given 0-100 points. These raw points are doubled. Hence, the PT is worth twice as much as an essay.
The raw score for the written portion is out of 700 points: 500 points from the five essays, 200 points from the PT.
If youre taking the Attorneys Exam, this is the entire basis for your overall scaled score.
If youre taking the general exam, the written portion counts for half of your overall score. The other half comes from the MBE.

So How Does Knowing The Grading Procedure Help You With Preparing For The California Bar Exam
This means you can attack the exam more strategically, especially if youre a repeater.
If you see that youre getting 60 on your essays and think youre failing all your essays, but dont notice that you were actually very close to a 1440 or 1390 on the written side, then you might waste time focusing too much on essays. Now you know that you actually did pretty well.
Or you see that your scaled score was rather low but you dont notice that you got a 55 on the PT. You might then neglect to work on your PT in favor of essays, a common pitfall. Your average raw score goes up by 10/7 or about 1.43 points for every 5 points on the PT.
Knowing your score breakdown, you could instead aim for the low-hanging fruit, get 10 more points on the PT, and add 20 more raw written points .
The MBE results are sometimes deceptive. The numbers may seem pretty good. Maybe you did 20% on some subjects but did better than most on the others. You can use the relative percentiles to surgically treat your weak subjects, but you should also look at the scaled score to see how far you actually are from the passing score of 1390.

Changes To The Mpre Testing And Accommodations
Beginning with the March 2020 administration, the exam will be given on computers and administered at Pearson VUE testing centers across the country. Registration for the March exam opens on December 16, 2019. There are several centers in the metro Detroit area, but you likely want to register early to ensure that you get a seat at one of them to avoid traveling to take the text.
If you need to apply for accommodations for the exam, the process has changed. You must request accommodations before you register for the test, preferably by the opening of the registration period for the exam.
If the accommodations that you would seek are based on a visual impairment that requires a need for large print materials or adjustments to a computer monitor , you do not need to apply for an accommodation as the testing center computers are all capable of providing these adjustments.
Finally, accommodations based on permanent or unchanging conditions will be granted for a period of eligibility of up to 24 months as opposed to the previous policy of limiting accommodations to one specific administration of the exam.
If you have any questions about applying for the MPRE or accommodations for the MPRE, contact or 577-3997. The office is located in Suite 1255 on the first floor of the Law School.
