The Texas Department for Licensing and Regulation has proposed cosmetology and barber rules as a necessary step to implement the new requirements outlined in House Bill 1560 , which was signed into law in June.
HB 1560 combines barbering and cosmetology under one regulatory board, which covers individual license types, establishments, and schools. The bill and proposed rules:
- Eliminate instructor and wig-related licenses
- Eliminate barber pole regulation
- Modify curriculum requirements
- Suggest a 1,000-hour curriculum for barber and cosmetology students under this model, barber and cosmetology students will be taught together for 700 hours and separately for 300 hours for training in their specialty scope of practice
- Clarify theory-required curriculum hours for each license type
- Increase the number of hours that can be obtained through field trips
If you would like to submit written comments to TDLR in support of, or in opposition to, the proposed rules, before October 24, 2022. The final rules have a target effective date of January 1, 2023. Take The Written Exam
In Texas, the written Esthetician exam is completed entirely via a computer. So, before your exam begins you will be directed to a computer terminal.
Then, once you have taken your seat, your computer will prompt you to confirm:

If you pass the written exam, you will be allowed to schedule and take the Practical exam. You must receive at least 70% or a score of 100 to pass the practical exam. You will receive your official paper score for this exam after you have finished as well.
There is no limit to the number of times you can take this exam. However, a new fee must be paid for each attempt.

What Should I Bring
It is important that you arrive at the testing site at least 30 minutes before your exam is to begin. This will allow enough time for you to complete a sign-in and verification process, as well as be ready for the exam. Those who arrive late will not be allowed to test that day and will have to reschedule, forfeiting their exam fee.
You will need to provide at least one form of personal identification such as a drivers license, passport, state ID, or military ID. This must contain your signature, full name as it appears on your application, a recent photo, date of birth, and expiration date. If your ID has missing or incorrect information, you will be asked to present another one or will not be allowed to test.
No personal belongings are allowed in the testing area. These must be kept in a designated locker for the duration of the exam. these items include but are not limited to:
