We all have various studying styles that work best for us. Some learn best with videos, others with audio, and others are great with texts. Know your style and apply it to your preparation for the SPI exam. For instance

  • If you learn best via audiovisuals, get on YouTube or other platforms and view podcasts or lessons that cover SPI exam topics.
  • If you learn best with images, then rough sketches of concepts will be a great way to study and note down.
  • If discussions are your thing, then find or create a study group to discuss topics and concepts.

Passing The Sonography Principles And Instrumentation Exam

If you had told me just a few months before I would be staring at a computer screen taking a physics exam I probably would have laughed at you. But if I can do it, so can anyone! Here are a few helpful tips I used and gathered from other sonographers who saw that pass after the exam.

Know Your Spi Study Style

Strategies for Passing the ARDMS SPI Exam

We all have slightly different learning styles, and you probably know yours by now. Make sure you tailor your studying to what works for you!

  • If you understand concepts well with visuals, draw out rough sketches of probe components or sound waves

  • If you are an auditory learner, there are plenty of YouTube lectures online and podcasts that cover SPI.

  • If you learn best through discussion, be sure to create a study group to talk through concepts together.

As a general rule, using mnemonic devices help most students with harder to learn concepts. Dont just reread, rewrite, and copy old notes. Utilize Prepry apps to zero in on the topics that you are struggling to learn, and make an effort to link related ideas. Think about what you are learning from a holistic approach and relate it to clinical experiences you had in school.

Prepare With An Spi Practice Test

Taking a practice test or two is a great way to prepare for your actual examination. We offer two online versions of the SPI Practice Test SPIa and SPIb that simulate the computer interface used in the actual test center environment. The SPI practice test review is comprised of 30 sample questions and is 30 minutes long.

The two distinct versions are equivalent in difficulty and content coverage. Note that if you take either test more than once, the questions will be the same.

After you complete a practice test, you will be emailed a report that shows the number of questions you answered correctly. While the report is an indication of your knowledge, the practice tests results should not be used to predict how well you will perform on the actual examination at the test center.

Regular Study Sessions: Keep in mind that regular study is key. Sporadic stints of intense study are not as effective as keeping a steady routine even if the timeframes are shorter. For example: studying a few SPI vocabulary words every day and maybe reviewing a page or two of ultrasound physics notes with your morning coffee may be of more benefit to you than an hour cram session done every other week.

Start Small: It may seem like you arent getting very far, but little by little you commit those tidbits of information to memory. Starting out small can help you gradually incorporate regular study into your daily routine. Increasing the frequency of those small study sessions can help too. Try squeezing in 10 to 15-minute sessions throughout your day. This can prove beneficial as you cover the most ground without getting bored or tired.

Changing Topics: Speaking of boredom, focusing on just one thing throughout the day can become tedious, so it is alright to change up what you are looking at. Maybe start with relationships and equations for one 10-minute session, then switch over to ultrasound artifacts when you sit down to have lunch.

Sticky Notes: Making use of sticky notes can help as well. Write out two or three vocabulary words and post them around your house or workspace. You might be surprised at how many vocabulary words you learn using that method.

How To Study Effectively

Your success on SPI test day depends not only on how many hours you put into preparing but also on whether you prepared the right way. Its good to check along the way to see whether your studying is paying off. One of the most effective ways to do this is by taking SPI practice tests to evaluate your progress. Practice tests are useful because they show exactly where you need to improve. Every time you take a free SPI exam practice test, pay special attention to these three groups of questions:

  • The questions you got wrong
  • The ones you had to guess on, even if you guessed right
  • The ones you found difficult or slow to work through

This will show you exactly what your weak areas are and where you need to devote more study time. Ask yourself why each of these questions gave you trouble. Was it because you didnt understand the material? Was it because you didnt remember the vocabulary? Do you need more repetitions on this type of question to build speed and confidence? Dig into those questions and figure out how you can strengthen your weak areas as you go back to review the material.

Use Time Scanning To Help You Memorize

While scanning, play around with doppler and frequencies. Try scanning without gel and think about the impedance difference. Change the sector width or the write/read zoom and notice how it slows or speeds your machines temporal resolution. Use a cysts posterior enhancement, a gallbladder stones absorption creating a posterior shadow or a babys cranium edge shadow to think about refraction. Increase your scale and see what happens to color demonstrated in the medial kidney. All these real life applications will help you remember when you are sitting in front of that computer screen trying to remember during your test.
