Why Do So Many Optometrists Require Appointments
The simple answer? Appointments lead to better time management and patient care.
Without proper appointment scheduling, your optometrist could see days that looked less like a doctors office and more like a drivers license office. This can have a rebound effect on how much time eye doctors feel they can spend with each patient.
Sorting exams into scheduled appointment times allows for an even flow of patients and shorter wait times.
Optometrists rarely offer walk-in exams unless there is an ocular urgent or emergent situation, says Mesheca C. Bunyon, president of the Maryland Board of Examiners in Optometry.
For routine eyeglass and contact lens exams, it is best to have an appointment to allow for the proper amount of time to complete testing and be educated by the doctor.
Mesheca also notes the possible need for eye dilation, which can require an additional 30- to 45-minute wait while the pupils fully dilate. Without the stability of a scheduled appointment, you could end up waiting much longer.
Stores and offices that do allow walk-in exams can experience wait times well over an hour during busy periods.

How Can I Find A Same
While some locations do offer walk-in eye exams, the convenience of walking in may not balance out the time youll wait to be seen or the potentially rushed exam.
And even for eye doctors who dont directly offer walk-ins, theres an alternative that could save you a lot of time in the waiting room and hopefully ensure a more thorough exam: a same-day appointment.
Same-day or next-day eye appointments can often be found locally, even for a routine exam. And checking availability is particularly straightforward with practices that offer online scheduling youre a few clicks or taps away from finding the next open time slot.
This is especially true with retail chains and the big-box vision centers attached to supermarkets.
Take the nationwide chain Americas Best Contacts & Eyeglasses, for example. Their online FAQ explains that, while they do allow walk-ins, its always best to schedule an appointment. Sure enough, a few same-day time slots were available when we checked their online scheduling system.
The same was true for many LensCrafters, Target Optical and Visionworks locations we checked. In the event that no same-day appointments were available, almost all had availability the following day.

Does Medicare Cover Eye Exams
Medicare covers a medical eye exam, which can be completed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist, but will not cover a refraction, which is part of a vision exam resulting in a prescription for glasses. You may be charged extra for a “refraction fee” if using Medicare coverage. Or, if you have a secondary provider, that may cover the refraction fee. This fee can vary by region and provider. Usually, your provider will inform you of this fee before the examination.

How Much Does A Cheap Eye Exam Cost
Cheap eye exams vary in cost but are usually available for $100 or less. Cheap tends to equate to basic. If you have serious vision health concerns, seek a comprehensive exam.
Cheap eye exams are not recommended for people diagnosed with:
- Serious vision health issues
Eye exams are important for protecting your vision and for early diagnosis of other health concerns. Some basic eye exams can detect problems with heart health, stroke risk, and diabetes-related vision problems.
However, if you believe these issues are a concern for you, its best to set up routine checkups at a full-service eye health center.
Cheap eye exams are ideal for young people, do not suspect any eye health issues, and want to measure their visual acuity.

Best For Convenience: Walmart Vision Center
Walmart Vision Center
-
Lesser known frame brands
-
High staff turnover
Perhaps the most well-known discount retail eye clinic, Walmart Vision Center began operating in 2001. Found in most Walmart stores across the nation, the clinic offers eye exams conducted by self-employed optometrists who lease space near the vision center, or who are employed directly by Walmart.
If you already have a prescription, you can purchase frames and lenses without paying to have an eye exam. For the cost of basic eye exam and contact exams, contact the Walmart nearest you. As for eyeglasses, frames start at roughly $12 for women and $20 for men. And, prices seem to be based on frame materials.
While most locations offer a big selection of frames, including ones for kids, you wont find many elite name brands. If you prefer to purchase your frames online, Walmart Vision Center will fill them with your prescription for a nominal fee plus the cost of the lenses you select. Contact lenses begin as low as around $20 per box, but that price varies depending on the brand.
Walmart Vision Center honors most major insurance plans, but only for eye exams and in-store purchases. Vision center hours are typically Monday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Free Eye Exams Vs Paid Exams
An eye exam can differ in cost based on many factors, including whether the exam is done by an optometrist or an ophthalmologist, where you live, where the exam is conducted , and the type of tests that are performed.
Free eye exams may be performed more often by optometrists and may not be as comprehensive as an exam done by an ophthalmologist using the latest technology and testing procedures. It can cost more for some procedures, such as pupil dilation or retinal photos. Tests related to contact lens fitting and prescriptions may require additional procedures therefore, they often cost extra.
Check what is included in your eye exam. At the very least, a comprehensive eye exam should include the following:
- Review of your personal and family eye health and medical history
- Use of an eye chart to evaluate distance vision
- Testing to evaluate close vision
- Diagnostic testing to evaluate for myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia, and astigmatism
- Testing to check that the eyes work properly together
- Examination of the optic nerve and an eye pressure test to check for glaucoma
- Interior and front of the eye examination to check for cataracts, macular degeneration, and other possible issues
- A pupil response test by shining a bright light and testing for reactivity
Your eye doctor may also conduct supplementary specialized imaging tests to check for eye diseases and other issues.
