An Opternative eye exam costs $40 for a glasses or contact lens prescription, or $60 for both. The companys service is available in 29 states.
According to a clinical trial done on 30 people and listed on the companys website, the Opternative eye exam is just as accurate as a traditional office exam.
Aaron Dallek, chief executive officer and cofounder of Opternative, told Healthline that his service uses the only technology registered with the Food and Drug Administration that provides physician-reviewed prescriptions.
Who Is Eligible For The Online Vision Test
The online vision test is intended for use by people between the ages of 18-55 located in an available US State between the prescriptiverange of -12 to +6 sphere, less than -5.0 cylinder, and less than +4 add power. Patients with underlying medical conditions or medicationimpacting their vision are not eligible for the online vision test.

Other Terms On Your Eye Prescription
Depending on the kinds of lenses you need, you may see other terms on your eye prescription, including:

To account for this condition, your doctor can add a prism to your lenses. The prism is placed in a certain position and orientation based on your prescription, which will also notate the direction of the prisms thickest edge, or base.
The prism will also have its own refractive strength, measured in prism diopters.

It is important to remember that at-home tests should not replace a medical eye exam or comprehensive eye exam carried out by a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Pdcheck Determines Pupillary Distance
PDCheck was easy enough to almost be fun. You start by putting on these oh-so-attractive white frames and launching the PDCheck app. It will provide some prompting to guide you through how the process is supposed to run.
Then, you snap a picture of the frames on your face. That’s shown in the picture on the left, below. Once you have that image, you need to move the little green crosshairs so they’re over the T marks on the glasses. The image below shows the interface before I adjusted all the crosshairs.
Once you’re done, you hit the Confirm button. The app produces the PD data you’ll need to order glasses, as shown below.
And yes, I blurred out my PD numbers. There’s probably no reason to do so, but it feels like personal identifying information.
Bottom line is the PDCheck process was simple and easy, and way more accurate than trying to hold up a ruler in front of your face while looking into a mirror.

While these two tests are important parts of vision care, it is important to understand that online eye tests are not complete eye exams, Jacquot said. Online testing does not currently identify other vision problems, eye health issues, or underlying health conditions that a comprehensive, in-person eye exam will uncover.
Jacquot said a comprehensive eye exam typically includes an assessment of patient history and a measurement of eye function.
It also includes a tonometry test, which measures eye pressure and can indicate the person is at an increased risk for glaucoma.
More tests on external and internal eye health are also performed during a complete exam. These can include dilation, which can help detect conditions like age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma.
A peripheral vision test is another exam often included. Loss of peripheral vision may also be a sign of glaucoma.
Jacquot said he embraces technology and believes there are benefits in increasing access to vision screening. However, he does not believe there is a substitute for a comprehensive, in-person eye exam.
