About Ap World History Test Questions

There are a total of sixty questions that you will be required to answer on the AP world history exam. However, unlike other AP exams, the world history test allows you to choose some of your free-response questions from a list of two or three.

You will answer fifty-five multiple-choice questions in fifty-five minutes. This means that you are allotted one minute for every question in the multiple-choice section. Do not fret. There will likely be questions that you immediately know the answer so you can have more time for questions you require thinking.

In the second section, you are required to answer three short-answer questions. The first two questions will be pulled from a source and you have to answer them. Then, you get the option to choose between questions three or four, so be sure to choose the one that you have a stronger argument for.

The final section of the test is the most unique portion of an AP test. There are only two required questions in this section. The first is a document-based question that asks you to assess numerous documents before answering. The second is a choice between three different long-answer questions.

You will be given forty minutes to complete the second section and an hour and forty minutes to complete the third. Make sure your arguments are well-thought but also be sure to utilize time wisely to be the most efficient AP world history exam-taker.

Tip : Take Practice Exams And Set A Target Score

In the spring, aim to take at least one full practice examideally in late March or early Aprilonce you’ve learned most of the World History material. By a full practice exam, we mean the entire AP World History test. Time yourself and take it in one sitting, following official time restrictions.

Why should you do this? It will give you a chance to experience what it’s like to take a full AP World History exam before you sit for the real thing. This helps you build stamina and perfect your timing. All the practice in the world won’t help you if you run out of steam on your last essay question and can barely think.

Also, set a target score for each section. Good news: you don’t need to be aiming for 100% on Section 1 and perfect scores on every essay in Section 2 in order to secure a 5the highest possible score. Far from it, actually!

The truth is that a high multiple-choice score with average short-answer and free-response scores can net you a score of 5. Likewise, an average multiple-choice score with high short-answer and free-response scores can also net you a 5.

Set realistic score targets based on your personal strengths. For example, a really good writing student might go the average multiple choice/strong essay route, while a stronger test taker might go the other way around. You could also be somewhere in-between.

The more you practice before the test, the more likely you are to meetor even exceed!your AP score goal.

When Should I Start Studying For Ap Exams

2021 Live Review 1 | AP World History | Discussing Units 1-3

The sooner you can start studying for the AP exams, the more time you will have to practice strategies that can help you ace them. Typically, students start reviewing content 1 to 3 months before the AP test and switch to taking practice exams closer to the exam date. When determining the timing of your AP exam study plan, remember:

  • It will take time to collect and organize review materials and to make a study schedule.
  • The time it takes you to review the concepts covered throughout the course will be based on your study strategy. If you need to watch videos to relearn the concepts, you need to give yourself more time to study.
  • You want to spend at least two weeks before the test day taking practice exams and identifying concepts that need more practice.

The more time you give yourself to study for your AP exams, the less time you will need to devote to studying each day, and the more likely you will retain the material.

In the next section of this AP study guide, there are examples of a 2-week, 1-month, or 3-month AP exam study plan.

Tip : Keep Up With Your Reading

When it comes to AP World History, you can’t sleep through the class all year, skim a prep book in April, and then expect to get a perfect 5 on the test. You’re learning a huge chunk of human history, after all! Trying to cram for this test late in the game is both stressful and inefficient because of the sheer volume of material you have to cover.

And all that reading would hurt your eyes.

Instead, keep up with your reading and do well in your World History classto ensure you’re building a strong foundation of knowledge throughout the year. This way, when it hits spring, you can focus on preparing for the exam itself and the topics it’s likely to test, as opposed to frantically trying to learn almost a thousand years of human history in just two months.

If your teacher isn’t already requiring you to do something like this, be sure to keep notes of your readings throughout the school year. This could be in the form of outlines, summaries, or anything else that’s useful to you. Taking notes will help you process the readings and remember them better. Your notes will also be an invaluable study tool in the spring.

Finally, check the website of whatever textbook your class uses. Many textbook websites have extra features, such as chapter outlines and summaries, which can be excellent study resources for you throughout the year.

Ap World History Exam Description

The AP world history exam covers nine units that your teacher taught you about in class. Your teacher may choose to group them together differently or teach them in a different order, but these same nine units will both appear on the exam and be covered in class:

To succeed you will need to be able to formulate an answer that has concrete evidence behind it supported by the graph or document you are provided. Also, be able to distinguish between a primary and secondary source and the differences between the two.

There will be questions on the exam that also ask you to make connections between two different historical occurrences, so you will need to know how certain parts of history reflect or even repeat themselves as time goes on.

  • Review the concepts covered in the CED.When reviewing concepts in the CED, it is best to use your past tests and quizzes to evaluate your knowledge of each concept. While it is important to refresh your memory on all the materials to be fully prepared for the AP exam, make sure you spend more time reviewing concepts you underperformed on.For these concepts, supplement the content from the CED and notes with materials not provided in class, such as YouTube videos posted by educators.
