Strategies To Successfully Tackle The Multiple
The multiple-choice section of the AP® Spanish Language and Culture Exam was my least favorite part of the test until this year. In the past, I felt this section was too discouraging for students, and I didnt think there were any specific strategies that could really make a difference.
Dont get me wrong, I love to teach AP. I love to see my students grow in their linguistic proficiency and cultural competency. However, in the past, I mainly focused on making the AP content accessible and relatable to them and supporting their production of the language.
You can go HERE and HERE if you want to read more about that. In these two blogs posts, written in collaboration with my friend Bertha Delgadillo, we explain how to tackle the Free Response sections of the AP® Exam.
The multiple-choice section was almost left out in my class. Anytime I grabbed a multiple-choice practice text, I scratched my head and wondered how in the world I could support my students.
Instead of doing multiple-choice practices, I opted for using the Interpretative Quick Quizzes created by AnneMarie Chase because I felt that they were much more effective and encouraging for students.
Nonetheless, this year, I decided to dig deeper in the multiple-choice section of the AP® Spanish Language and Culture Exam, and Im starting to really enjoy this part of the exam. How?

Its great being able to interact with native speaking people and having a conversation with them not just doing all the work on paper. Its also an amazing opportunity to speak with native Spanish-speaking people without having to travel to a native Spanish-speaking country.

Its a great way to learn Spanish, from native Spanish speakers in a 1-on-1 environment. Its been fairly easy to schedule classes around my daughters other classes. The best value for us has been ordering multiple classes at a time. All the instructors have been great!

How Will Ap Scores Impact My College Chances
AP classes look great on college applications as a demonstration of course rigor and evidence that youre challenging yourself. But your AP scores have little impact on your college chances in fact, most college applications dont require you to report your scores. For example, the Common Application has an optional section to report AP scores.
Just because AP scores dont factor heavily into decisions, this doesnt mean you shouldnt aim for a high score. Depending on the school, high-enough scores can mean you get credit for or test out of introductory college courses. This can save you a lot of time and money!

Answer: D
This question is asking about the authors technique. Well need to consider the article as a whole. An easy way to do this is to look at the section headers. For this passage, we have Tasa de natalidad baja, which gives statistics about the low birth rate. The next section deals with the consequences and the final section gives solutions to remedy the situation.
Since the author offers lots of data and statistics to back up their claims, answer choice D is the best option. This question is an example of how taking a moment to briefly summarize each section gives you a better idea of the organization and flow of the passage overall. In this case, reading the entire passage would be a waste of valuable time.
Answer: C
This question is asking what the 2,1 represents within the passage. If we look at lines 14 and 15, the passage states that European women have 1.5 children each, on average, which is below the necessary number for generational repopulation, 2.1. So, the figure 2.1 symbolizes the number of children per woman necessary for generational repopulation.
Answer: D
So, choice D must be the correct answer, and we can see that it makes sense since the table shows the variation in birth rate over time.
Answer: B
Answer: B
Supporting The Linguistic Skills Of Learners

How do we build this bridge?
- Read or listen to the text first.
- Identify the key words that are unknown to your students.
- Find a visual that relates to the text.
- Orally explain to the students what the text is going to be about.
- Emphasize the key words.
- If the text is too long, divide it into parts. Since the questions usually go in order of the text, you can split the text into 2 or 3 parts and have students answer the corresponding questions. This works great with two sources.
I hope these strategies help you prepare your students for this section of the AP Exam and get them ready to answer any question. Dont forget to get your copy of the Question Guide HERE!

This question is asking about the conclusion of the theater show. If we look at the first paragraph, we can find a description of the show. This can be summarized as follows:
The evil Cuchiflín wants to kidnap the baby of a prince and princess, but with the help of some kids, the baby and the kids manage to foil Cuchiflíns plot and become heroes.
From this summary, options B and C are clearly incorrect. Answer choice A might be correct, but the conclusion cant necessarily be reached from the information given in the text. So, choice D is the most logical answer.
Answer: A
To confirm that choice A is correct, we can look at line 14, where it says, Con todo su amor puso la rosa marchita en agua. Because marchita referring to withered also makes sense in this context, answer choice A should be the correct answer.
