Breaking Down the Exam Essay Structure | Live Review Session 1 | AP English Literature

The best way to use a complete official practice test is to do a practice-run for the exam. So find a quiet room, bring a timer or watch so you can time sections, and get to work! This will help you get familiar with the exam experience so you’ll feel more comfortable on exam day!

Since there are two complete AP Lit practice tests, it makes sense to take one early on in your studying time, and one later. You can get a parent, tutor or teacher to grade the exams. The early test will help you figure out what you need to work on, and the later test will show you how you’ve improved! Since the AP English Literature test is more skills-heavy than content-heavy, you shouldn’t feel totally lost taking a practice test even in the middle of the school year.

Sample Questions From The Course And Exam Description

The 2019 AP English Literature Course and Exam Description has practice multiple-choice questions and free-response questions. They don’t add up to a complete test–there are only 19 multiple-choice questions instead of 55but there are three free response questions . Even though there arent many multiple-choice questions, they are great for simple practice.

If you’re looking for more questions like these, you can revisit the old exam description booklets as well.

Unofficial Practice Tests And Resources

Since unofficial practice tests aren’t going to be quite as similar to the real AP exam as official College Board materials, they won’t be quite as useful for preparing for the format of the exam or its questions. However, they can be very valuable close-reading practice. And since that’s a critical skill for the exam, it’s still worth it to use unofficial resources.

Be very quiet. She’s close-reading.

The gold standard of AP English Literature practice tests and AP English Literature practice exam questions are College Board released materials. That’s because the College Board administers the AP exams, so their practice questions are most like the actual AP questions you’ll see on the test.

There are three different kinds of resources offered by the College Board: complete released exams from past years, released free-response questions from past years, and sample questions from the “AP Course And Exam Description.”

Read Some Books Maybe More Than Once

One of the most important steps you can take to prepare for the AP Literature and Composition exam is to read a lot and read well. You’ll be reading a wide variety of notable literary works in your AP English Literature course, but additional reading will help you further develop your analytical reading skills.

I suggest checking out this list of notable authors in the 2014 AP Lit Course Description .

In addition to reading broadly, you’ll want to become especially familiar with the details of four to five books with different themes so you’ll be prepared to write a strong student-choice essay. You should know the plot, themes, characters, and structural details of these books inside and out.

Hone Your Close Reading And Analysis Skills

Your AP class will likely focus heavily on close reading and analysis of prose and poetry, but extra practice won’t hurt you. Close reading is the ability to identify which techniques the author is using and why. You’ll need to be able to do this both to gather evidence for original arguments on the free-response questions and to answer analytical multiple-choice questions.

Here are some helpful close reading resources for prose:

Official Released College Board Exams

1 | Attacking Multiple-Choice Questions, Part 1: Prose | AP English Literature and Composition

There are three official released College Board Exams. However, only the most recent one is complete. The 1999 and 1987 exams have the standard 55 multiple-choice questions, but both are missing parts of the three question free-response section. You can still use them as complete exams if you supplement them with released free-response questions from past years which we recommend since official multiple-choice problems are hard to come by.

This is the best AP Lit practice test available. It’s the most recent exam released by the College Board, and it follows the format of the current test with 55 multiple-choice questions and three free-response questions. Definitely make use of this test!

This test excludes the poetry and prose analysis questions of the free-response section and only has the student choice question. So, to take it as a complete exam, you’d need to supplement it with questions 1 and 2 from the released free-response questions below. You can actually get question 2 for the 1999 test from the official free-response questions bank, but the excerpt for question 1 can’t be reprinted, so you’ll need to supplement with another poetry analysis question.

Or supplement with this tree-poem.

How Is The Ap Literature Test Graded

The multiple-choice section of the exam comprises 45% of your total exam score the three essays, or free-response section, comprise the other 55%. Each essay, then, is worth about 18% of your grade.

As on other AP exams, your raw score will be converted to a score from 1-5. You don’t have to get every point possible to get a 5 by any meansbut the AP English Literature test does have one of the lowest 5 rates of all APs, with only 5.0% of students receiving 5s in 2021.

So, how do you calculate your raw scores?

The Following May Depend Upon Your School And Instructor But Generally Are True:

  • AP Lang is typically taken Junior year of high school

  • AP Lit is typically taken Senior year of high school.

  • In AP Lit, you are expected to read more. You read more novels and plays. Additionally, you have to read, understand, and analyze poetry. The complexity level of what you are reading is also usually higher in AP Lit than AP Lang, and you are asked to go more in-depth in terms of analysis.

  • In AP Lang, many course syllabi include reading a novel or two, but the majority of reading is nonfiction texts, such as historical documents, speeches, articles, and editorials. An emphasis is placed upon analyzing how a writer is communicating a specific message and why they chose these specific strategies for their intended audience and given context.

  • Taking AP Lang and passing the AP exam often allows you to skip over the English 101 or a general education English requirement in college.

Personally, Im a fan of both coursesthey train students to look beneath the surface of a text, thinking critically about how we use language to shape the world we live in.

In general, Id recommend AP Lang for students interested in basically any career path and AP Lit for students interested in reading, writing, and humanities. With either class, students will have to put in time and effort to succeed.

Ap English Literature And Composition Exam 2022

Unlike 2020 and 2021, when the College Board modified the AP exams as a response to the disruption caused by COVID-19, the 2022 AP exams will return to its original format.

This year, the AP exams will take place over a two-week period in May: May 26 and May 913.

The College Board may change the format, however, if schools are disrupted in the spring due to COVID-19.

Well continue to monitor global, national, and local health conditions, putting the health and safety of students first, and if there are widespread school closures in spring 2022, well provide options similar to those offered in 2021, the College Board noted here.

We will, of course, update this guide if that should happen.

The AP English Literature and Composition exam for 2022 will be a full-length paper-and-pencil exam that students can take in school only.

Here is what you need to know to do well in the upcoming AP English Literature exam.

Ap Literature Exam: Key Takeaways

The AP Literature exam is a three-hour test that includes an hour-long multiple-choice section based on five prose and poetry passages and with 55 questions, and a two-hour free-response section with three essays: one analyzing a poetry passage, one analyzing a prose passage, and one analyzing a work chosen by you, the student.

The multiple-choice section is worth 45% of your total score, and the free-response section is worth 55%. The three essays are each scored on a rubric of 0-6, and raw scores are converted to a final scaled score from 1 to 5.

Here are some things you can do to prepare for the exam:

  • Read books and be particularly familiar with four to five works for the student-choice essays
  • Read poetry
  • Practice writing essays
  • Take practice tests!

On test day, be sure to really look closely at all the passages and really interact with them by marking the text in a way that makes sense to you. This will help on both multiple-choice questions and the free-response essays. You should also outline your essays before you write them.

With all this in mind, you’re well on your way to AP Lit success!

Note, though, that no one will prompt you to move from essay to essay, so you can theoretically divide up the time however you want. Just be sure to leave enough time for each essay! Skipping an essay, or running out of time so you have to rush through one, can really impact your final test score.

The first two essays are literary analysis essays of specific passages, with one poem and one prose excerpt. The final essay is an analysis of a given theme in a work selected by you, the student.

Essays 1 & 2: Literary Passage Analysis

For the first two essays, you’ll be presented with an excerpt and directed to analyze the excerptfor a given theme, device, or development. One of the passages will be poetry, and one will be prose. You will be provided with the author of the work, the approximate date, and some orienting information .
